Santa Maria Assunta, Avio, Italy
Overview
A friend knew her Grandfather came from Avio, Italy but did not know much more. Searching the two main sources for online Italian records (FamilySearch's Historical Record Collections and The National Archives of Italy's Ancestors Portal) did not produce any results. After more inquiry into the Trentino-Alto Adige region of Italy, where Avio is located, I was able to find
Nati in Trentino 1815-1923, an online database of birth indexes that also lists parish. As a result, I was able to tell my friend specifics about her Grandfather and that her Italian family attended Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta. If she ever planned a trip to Avio to walk the streets of her ancestors or wanted to do more intensive research on her family's records, she must visit Santa Maria Assunta.

Insight
You cannot assume the only sources of online records are FamilySearch or The National Archives of Italy. Further investigation can sometimes yield additional sources, such as
Nati in Trentino 1815-1923. And you cannot assume all records are online, those fortunate enough to travel to Italy must visit the town hall and parish church, and search available civil and church records.
